Las Cruces, New Mexico
The project site resides in the lower west quadrant of a busy freeway interchange. The lot, at .296 acres, is acutely angular in shape and only accessible from the southwestern end. The terrain slopes range from 12% to 25% in a North to South direction. In essence, a "left-over" site and the last commercially zoned property in a three lot tract., the location was predominantly selected for its high visible exposure to daily traffic.
The owner, an optometrist, requested a contemporary design that would encourage daily passersby to visit and that would visually set the tone as a progressive eye care practice. The design response draws heavily from the obvious physical constraints of the site. The site’s angular lines in “plan” and “elevation” naturally informed the building form and spatial experience.
